After a visit to Budapest for a conference, I spent a few days in Vienna. Whereas my visit to Budapest had been punctuated, entertainingly, by a national holiday that seems to be traditionally celebrated by anti-government protests, Vienna was celebrating a national holiday in a very different way. Vienna, on this occasion, was lit up with lights and the public areas were filled with displays, bands and stalls offering food and drinks. Instead of crowds wielding placards, Austrian families walked the streets in large numbers and the celebrations were exceedingly good-natured and welcoming. Vienna proved to be a very engaging city and one I plan to visit again and, if fortune smiles upon me, often.
